Sunday 19th October 2008

The weather was perfect for Seymour Cup day with the crowd starting to roll in at about 10.30. Pretty soon there were groups of happy people filling the marquees, shade canopies and umbrellas, enjoying a glass of bubbly and definitely in party mode.

Fashion was to the fore on Darley Seymour Cup day, with both ladies and gents dressed to impress.

There was keen competition in the Excessories Fashions on the Field contest, with more than 150 entries for the 5 categories, offering some fantastic prizes. Winner of the Excessories Racegoer of the Day was Kristy Young from Kirwans Bridge. Kristy won a $1000 voucher courtesy of Excessories. As a result of this win Kristy went on to be an entrant in the “Country’s Best Dressed Racegoer” competition.

Racing kicked off at 12.15 with Tsar Alex breaking his maiden status but it was race 8, the Darley Seymour Cup, that everyone had come to see. The race didn’t disappoint, with the Byron Cozamanis trained, Aztec Smytzer winning by a length and three quarters from God’s Hand (Bart Cummings) and Dorabella NZ (Mick Price).

Our thanks go to Darley for their sponsorship of the Seymour Cup, their support has been terrific and we appreciate the contribution that Darley has made, not just to the Seymour Racing Club but to the Seymour community in general.

The crowd on the front lawn enjoyed all the activity on the big screen while further down the straight, the duo “Hurricane” entertained the music lovers.

The restaurants were packed to capacity, with racegoers admiring the panoramic views across the track whilst enjoying an excellent three course luncheon.

The day wound up with a star of the future, in Daintree Duke (John Symons & Sheila Laxon) winning the final race. We are sure to see more of him in the winner’s stall in the months ahead.

As the crowd of just over 4000 made their way home, plans were already underway for an even bigger Seymour Cup next year
